Take Caution With What You Surround Yourself With | The Teen Safe Zone

Hi everyone! Welcome, or welcome back, to The Teen Safe Zone where it's safe for teens to be themselves! In today's blog post, I wanted to discuss taking caution with the things and people with whom you surround yourself and how everything can either positively or negatively affect your life.

I was talking to my friend the other day about how we should be cautious about what we surround our lives with because everything that you do or get involved with has some kind of impact on your life. This includes everything from the music that you listen to, to the friends that you hang out with. With the start of a new year, I know many people are on self-discovery journeys, and many times you try to change your habits but wonder why you keep going back to your previous lifestyle. When was the last time you analyzed your life and thought about where the positive and negative roots were coming from?

You Become What You Surround Yourself With

You won't hang out with people with whom you don't have anything in common, will you? Have there ever been a time where you were hanging out with a group of people that you had nothing in common with at first, but then slowly along the way you somehow caught onto their habits? Maybe you haven't seen it first hand, but you've probably seen a close friend completely change to fit in with their new group of friends. This is where the quote "You become what you surround yourself with" comes into play.

If you're trying to change your life to be a better person, but your friends are living a completely opposite lifestyle, it would be best to move on and make new friends with people who have the same goals as you do. If you're recovering from, for example, a party addiction, you wouldn't continue hanging out with friends who party every day because it would be nearly impossible to mix the two. The bottom line here is that sometimes the people that we surround ourselves with could be the core reason why we have a hard time getting out of bad habits. The people in our lives can either have a positive or negative impact on our lives. Imagine if you had a friend who has a negative mindset, and anytime something good happens in your life, they turn it into something negative. These are the types of people that you don't want to surround yourself with. Even if you are the "positive" person in the friendship, it won't be long until the negativity gets to you.

Surround yourself with people who genuinely make you happy. People who will not tempt or influence you to do things you are uncomfortable with or that you know are wrong. Don't hang around people who are going in the opposite direction that you are in life. There is a quote that everyone knows that says opposites attract, but the opposites should bring out the best in each other, not bring each other down. If you are in a situation with a person like that, then it is best to let them out of your life.

The Media You Entertain Can Impact You

This is something that oftentimes we don't think is a "big deal," but the media that we consume can also impact the way we live and view life. For example, if someone continuously listens to sad and depressing music, it will eventually make them a sad and depressing person if they weren't already one. If you want to be a more positive and happy person, then listening to sad music wouldn't be the fix. Analyzing the music that someone listens to can tell you a lot about them because you wouldn't typically like a song if you didn't relate to the lyrics, would you? If someone listens to hardcore rap (with a negative message), it could make them a more aggressive and negative person. Have you ever listened to a song that got your adrenaline pumping, made you happy, or made you aggressive? Music has a huge effect on the way we view life and the way we feel.

Another example is video games. A lot of the time, people who play violent video games will see life in a violent way. There are so many examples of how the media we consume affects us that we could talk about this topic for hours. Other examples are books and television. If you truly want to change your life habits, start by analyzing the things that you watch, read, listen to, and surround yourself with, because oftentimes these are things that we overlook that can have a huge impact on us.

I love how you not only explain things but you provide everyday examples to make it easier to comprehend and add relation to how it ties into the blog topic. Like how you used examples such as how music can make you feel a certain way, so it would also be able to impact someone's life. Keep up the work!
